Curse of Chucky (Unrated)

Curse of Chucky

What started as an innocent Horror flick about a killer that transfers his spirit into a doll in Child’s Play back in 1988 has become a cultural phenomenon driven by the main inanimate object. Curse of Chucky marks the sixth film in the series, and what seems like the end of the second trilogy. Another direct-to-DVD release from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, a good nine years after Seed of Chucky was released, many are heralding this as the end of the line for the series. But, if this is true, is Curse of Chucky a well deserved conclusion, or is this far from a fitting entry into the series?

Now You See Me

Now You See Me

Now Your See Me is a film with an interesting concept on the Crime/Mysyery genre. Take a group of magicians and have them rob various locations by use of their “magic” performances. Yes, it’s a story arc that has been done before, but this sleek new interpretation of the idea immediately spoke to the viewers who have been caught up in the “mind freak” era courtesy of individuals like Chris Angel. But, does this film and its star cast do a superb job at leaving the viewer wondering how they pulled it off, or is this nothing more than a cheap parlour trick or gimmick?

Would You Rather

Would You Rather

“Would you rather…” is a game that, chances are, you’ve played at least once in your life. If you haven’t, you only need to watch an episode of Family Guy with the gang at The Clam, as they seem to always be playing this. Like “Truth or Dare,” one player asks another a hypothetical question, such as “Would you rather be punched in the face or lick an old tire” for example, though usually the questions are more sexual than anything. Would You Rather takes the hypothetical element out of the game, and makes it a life or death situation. Released in late 2012, this film has recently made it to video on demand, as well as DVD, and boasts a strong, as well as interesting cast. But, does this Horror/Thriller on such a traditional game stick out, or is it far less engaging than inquiring against another flesh and blood player on who they would rather sleep with?

American Mary

American Mary

Entered into the 2012 Screamfest, American Mark took home five different awards including Best Picture, Best Actess, and Best Director. The film was penned, as well as directed, by Jen and Sylvia Soska, and is set to introduce viewers to some of the most deranged and bizarre concepts of body modification one can imagine. With a solid cast lined up, American Mary has been making waves through the internet community, and shows that Canada is growing into an unstoppable force within the Horror genre. But, is this festival award winning feature film that fantastic an experience, or a low grade attempt that was left in neutral?

The Car

The Car

The Car is a Horror/Thriller film from the late seventies that carried an aura of Mystery behind a killer vehicle on the loose. This movie received plenty of mixed reviews over the years, but has gained a loyal underground following. While not exactly a cult classic, it has inspired a few other films over the years, and even was parodied by Futurama, leading many to seek out this flick that seemed to disappear over time. Recently, The Car was made available once more on DVD, and has made its way onto many streaming video services. But, is this really all that great a film, or is it far from memorable, even by 1977′s standards?

First - The Purge (2013)

The Purge

While stuck watching re-runs of re-runs the other day, an interesting trailer appeared out of nowhere. Well, at least the first half of it was. It’s very rare I actually get excited about a big Hollywood blockbuster these days, and I was on the edge of my seat. Sure, the premise has been done before, but this one just looked good. For one day, or in this film just twelve hours, all crime is legal. Drugs, murder, robbery, sodomy, beastiality… Ok, well, maybe those last two parts won’t be in this film, but you get the idea! And then, out of nowhere, it introduces a subplot about a bleeding heart kid who lets a stranger into his home to save him. Of course he’s being chased by a group people, some wearing a female version of the Guy Fawkes mask, and they are intent on getting him, or killing the family if they don’t produce him. Where the hell did this twist come from, and who thought it would be a good idea to include it?

Bad Kids Go to Hell

Bad Kids Go to Hell

Bad Kids Go to Hell was released in early December of last year, and it didn’t really get a lot of positive feedback from critics, or fans of the genre either. It recently started making its rounds onto digital format, and most recently on DVD. The premise is simple: Six high school students trapped in what is meant to be a haunted library during detention. But, even the mot basic of summaries can quickly get distorted. Does this stylish looking creation stick to it’s guns, or does bad story writing and acting ruin what could have been an enjoyable and simple experience?

Citadel

Citadel

Citadel is an Irish Film Board funded Horror, Drama release. Originally prepared in 2011, the film didn’t see an actual release until 2013, hitting shelves on the first of March. The concept is about a man whos baby is taken by a group of kids who hold up in a large building, while teaming up with a crazy priest to rescue the child, but also put an end to the torment once and for all. But, is it that simple, or is there something more going on in this film than that?

Sinister

Sinister

One film I regret not getting to the theaters to see last year was the Horror, Mystery, Thriller titled Sinister. A movie about a ghoul that haunts movies (and other images one would suppose), this received plenty of praise from critics and patrons alike. And, with Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio involved, it was a simple decision to finally check this out now that it’s available on DVD. But, is this a film worth checking out, or is it absolute garbage?

Klown Kamp Massacre

Klown Kamp Massacre

Klown Kamp Massacre is a clown themed slasher film from I Can’t Believe It’s Not Hollywood Entertainment. Released in 2010, the film has met with plenty of high praise, comparing it to the likes of Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Well, it’s around four in the morning, and with nothing on television but re-runs and people doing their jobs, so it was time to throw in a movie, and this was the one that I settled on this time around. But, does this film live up to the high praise the internet is giving it, or does it cause me to give into levels of anger and frustration I didn’t know possible?
