Ted by Dawn has just hit the Steam store at a modest price of just two dollars (US). Cheaper if it’s still on sale. A 2D side scrolling shooter pits you as Ted, making his way through hordes of the pixelated undead. Avoid a number of murderous obstacles to reach the end of the level in this moderately short (as I later discovered) action title from Proteus Pixel. Check out the first two levels (and the tutorial) in the video play as I sit down and play this new indie title.
Features
Bandcamp Spotlight - Stendhal Syndrome: The Edge of Life
Ever since the inception of Killswitch Engage, Unearth, and As I Lay Daying, metalcore bands have become a dime a dozen. It’s growing increasingly difficult to find any with even a shred of anything unique or too memorable that doesn’t stir up an urge to listen to the pioneers that clearly inspired it. The Edge of Life, however, carries itself as more of a darker answer to those projects, as if the Austrian answer to “What is Dissection were a metalcore or hardcore band?”.
NYP Bandcamp Pick of the Day - Autokrator: Autokrator
Filthy, downtuned, and overall soul consuming. These are just a few words that can sum up the industrialized death metal sound that reverberates throughout Autokrator‘s self-titled full-length. Originally released independently by the five-piece French death/doom/drone outfit, Autokrator has since been released on cassette (Inferna Profundus Records), vinyl (Iron Bonehead Productions), and will finally receive a CD release through Third Eye Temple later this month. With one of the most circulated releases within the underground this year, why wouldn’t you want to squash your pathetic soul in this “name your price” digital version?
NYP Bandcamp Pick of the Day - Bodybag: Predominance of Insanity
This time around we’re going old-school grinding death. So old-school, in fact, we’re looking at the project with former Machetazo member Dop on vocals and drum! I’m talking, of course, about Bodybag and their debut release, a twelve-inch MLP titled Predominance of Insanity. You can also get this as a digital download from label Living Dead Society through their official Bandcamp account as a Name Your Price download! While the physical edition is far, far more superior for this raw slab of classic metal brutality, you can at least download it and check it out if you don’t have the interest, or the funds, to obtain that pressing from Madrid, Spain. I know, the shipping, especially to here in North America, can be as brutal as a set of Cannibal Corpse song lyrics.
Vlog - Unpacking Old Fire / Wings of War: Steel Murderers / Endless War Cassette
Due to the positive response I’ve received on my last two “unpacking” videos, I decided to do more to show off some of the rare or limited edition items in my collection, and what they happen to look like. A few days ago I ordered five cassettes from Bandcamp, so, I figured why not show them off as they arrive? Up first is the tape version of the recent split between Poland’s Old Fire and the UK’s Wings of War. Check it out, the bonus item I received, and one unfortunate downfall that might impact other copies.
NYP Bandcamp Pick of the Day - Electricjezus: Котлован
Electricjezus is a two-man doom metal group from the Russian Federation. Slow paced, down-tuned sludge filled trudging towards one’s own demise using bass pickups? What more can you possibly ask for?! How about dismal, melancholic, uncomproising hopelessness, and emotionally charged music slams its way across five songs that plod on for over fifty minutes? Quit reading and start headbanging!
