Mist: Demo 2013

Posted by & filed under Metal, Reviews.

In the Metal world, it seems female bands are becoming more common in certain styles. However, seeing a group of ladies in the Doom Metal genre is actually rather uncommon. This is where the five-piece Slovenian group comes into play. It’s only been about a year since they formed Mist, but they already have their debut two-song Demo 2013 available. Is this a sign of an anxious band ready to sink their teeth in, or are they jumping in head first a bit too early?

Trap for Cinderella

IFC Midnight has released an interesting collection of films meant to keep you on the edge, or at least guessing. Recently the Crime/Drama flick Trap for Cinderella was added to the growing list. Director Iain Softley (strong>The Skeleton Key, Hackers and K-Pax) presents his screenplay adaptation of the novel by Sebastian Japrisot to life with a cast of lesser known actors and actresses slowly climbing the ranks in the movie and television industry. But does this British Thriller about a young girl suffering from amnesia into a must see experience?

Various Artists: MM25 - Mega Man Rocks

Posted by & filed under Games, Reviews.

Sumthing Else Music Works and Capcom have put together a twenty-fifth anniversary compilation of various Mega Man tracks performed by a couple video game themed groups that take inspiration, as well as their names from the franchise. MM25: Mega Man Rocks is one of two “soundtracks” to be released for this celebration, which is really surprising since Capcom has canned pretty much all the announced anniversary and follow-up games, such as Mega Man Online, Mega Man Universe, and Mega Man Legends 3 among many others that probably were never announced. But, a compilation of cover songs is better than nothing, right?

Alghazanth: The Three-Faced Pilgrim

Finland’s Alghazanth is one of the countries best kept Black Metal secrets. The group formed back in 1995, over the years having members from many respectable acts in its ranks such as Funeris Noctunum, Swallow the Sun and Obscurant. The Symphonic Black Metal group’s debut album Thy Aeons Envenomed Sanity dropped back in 1999 through Woodcut Records, a smaller label in their home country that has played host to pretty much all the material that followed. Five more albums later, and we face what is being called their best effort yet, The Three-Faced Pilgrim. Is this the really the height of their Black Metal career, or is this far from as impressive as its made out to be?

Grim Funeral: Abdication Under Funeral Dirge

Grim Funeral: Abdication Under Funeral Dirge

Grim Funeral is yet another one man Black Metal operation. Helmed by Ur Profanum, former member of the bands Argar and Spectre, the project came to be in 2003, but didn’t release anything until a split in 2004 with Spectre. Another split with Gheestenland followed in 2007, as did the debut full-length A Grim Funeral to the Soul of This World a year later. It’s been five years since and the band is with Avantgarde Music to issue the follow-up full-length Abdication Under a Funeral Dirge, which is composed of nearly eighty minutes of pure Black Metal. But is it a solid effort, or are the extensive track lengths overkill?

Mahogany Head Grenade: Return to the Point of Departure

Posted by & filed under Metal, Reviews.

Mahogany Head Grenade is a Progressive Metal instrumental three-piece from Dallas, Texas that formed back in 2011. Since then, they have been fine tuning their craft, and recently issued their debut full-length album themselves. Return to the Point of Departure consists of five songs, but manages to be just shy of thirty-one minutes total. With all styles of instrumental Prog being all the rage right now, is this trio a flash in the pan, or does this recording offer fans of the style something to really sink their teeth into?
